Steve Sodders has been a resident of State Center since 2001 and a resident of Marshall County for a decade. He is a candidate for the Iowa State Senate in District 22. Senate District 22 covers all of Marshall and Hardin counties.
Steve currently is a Deputy Sheriff in Marshall County and has been serving in law enforcement for the last 20 years. Prior to serving Marshall County, Steve worked in the Grundy County sheriff’s office, the City of Huxley, Eldora and State Center. As part of his duties, Steve is a D.A.R.E instructor and was a detective on the Mid Iowa Drug Task Force. The Task Force covers four counties including Hardin and Marshall Counties and works with all levels of law enforcement and community efforts to curb drug use and abuse in central Iowa.
While on the Task Force, Sodders was instrumental in breaking up one of the largest drug cartels coming into and through Iowa for which he received the U.S. Attorney Office, Law Enforcement Coordinating committee award. Steve has also volunteered as a fire fighter for the State Center Volunteer Fire Department.
Steve is active with the YMCA, the Youth and Shelter Services organizations, and the Iowa Rivers Red Cross (which serves a multi county area). He is also inolved with the Iowa Teamsters Law Enforcement League.
In addition to protecting the community, Steve has been active in his local church, Hope United Methodist, located in Marshalltown. He has served as part of the “Wonderful Wednesdays” which is an after school program facilitated by his church. He has been a youth group leader for middle school students at Hope. He sits on the programming board and has been on the leadership council.
When Steve isn’t with his family, protecting the streets or serving his church, he coaches soccer and wrestling to middle school and high school students. Steve also belongs to the Full Moon Masonic Lodge of Melbourne. He has received Law Enforcement Officer of Year from Marshalltown Morning Optimist and Officer of the Year from the Marshalltown Elks.
Steve has a AS degree from Iowa Valley Community College, Marshalltown and is attending Iowa State University where he is working on a Bachelors Degree from the Sociology Department.
Sodders has been married to his wife Carrie for 15 years. She works as Early Head Start Educational Services Coordinator for Mid-Iowa Community Action located in Marshalltown. They have two children: Adam, who is 13 and Maggie, who is 10. Both children attend West Marshall schools and are active in both church and sports.
